Crossing the Victoria Falls Bridge into Zambia
While visiting Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe, we walked across the Victoria Falls Bridge into Zambia. This sounds easy enough to do, but while planning our trip there was a lot of conflicting information about what visas and vaccinations are necessary in order to do this. If you have the same questions, here is some information to help you plan your visit.
Top Experiences in Zimbabwe
Victoria Falls. Thundering and magnificent, Victoria Falls is one of the largest waterfalls on Earth, and one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the world. Massive sheets of falling water drop hundreds of feet into the Zambezi River below, creating massive vapor clouds visible from miles away. Visitors can walk the misty trails of the national park, take a dip in a natural infinity pool at the edge of the falls (Devil’s Pool), and cross the Victoria Falls Bridge into Zambia.
Hwange National Park. In western Zimbabwe lies Hwange National Park, the largest natural reserve in the country. Prepare yourself for some exciting game drives where you can try to spot the African Big Five, as well as cheetah, giraffe, zebra, and much more. Sleep in a tent under the stars or stay in a safari camp for a more upscale experience.
Lake Kariba. This massive man-made lake is another top spot in Zimbabwe for African wildlife sightings. Lake Kariba is surrounded by several national parks and reserves, such as Matusadona National Park, the Chete Safari Area, the Charara Safari Area, and more. Embark on a multi-day wildlife cruise and spot big game that come to drink at the shore.
Mana Pools National Park. Mana Pools is one of the most remote national parks in the country, tucked away in northern Zimbabwe. Its rich landscapes and diverse habitats make it a good destination for wildlife viewing, especially along the banks of the Zambezi River, where elephants, hippos, and crocodiles are commonly found.
Nyanga National Park. Explore the dramatic cliffs and lush valleys of Nyanga National Park in Zimbabwe’s Eastern Highlands. Summit Mount Nyangani, the highest mountain in Zimbabwe at a height of 2,592 meters (8,504 feet). And marvel at Mutarazi Falls, the tallest waterfall in Zimbabwe, from a suspension bridge or while soaring past it on a zipline. For hiking and adventure enthusiasts, this park is a great option.
Chimanimani National Park. Located along a portion of the Mozambique border, Chimanimani National Park is a rugged gem of Zimbabwe’s Eastern Highlands. Towering quartzite peaks rise from the dense forest that hides remote trails and waterfalls. Go here for an isolated mountainous wilderness experience.
Matobo National Park. Visit Matobo National Park for a blend of unique environments and diverse wildlife. The park is notable for its eye-catching balanced rock formations. It is also known for wildlife sightings such as rhinos, leopards, hippos, giraffes, zebras, wildebeests, and more.
Great Zimbabwe. This medieval stone city was once the capital of the Kingdom of Zimbabwe. Built between the 11th and 15th centuries, the city held a key trading position that provided wealth to the Great Zimbabwe Empire. Today, visitors can see the towering stone walls that defended the capital, as well as other ruins to get a sense of what life was like during this part of Zimbabwe’s history.
Animal Sanctuaries. Get up close with rescued animals such as elephants, giraffes, and more at an animal sanctuary. These sanctuaries offer a unique encounter with African wildlife that you cannot get when going on a safari. Some of the best animal sanctuaries in Zimbabwe for tourists include Wild is Life and the Twala Trust Animal Sanctuary.
When To Visit Zimbabwe
The best time to visit Zimbabwe is during the dry season, which runs from May to October. During this time, temperatures are pleasant with plenty of sunny days, but you may need to bundle up in the morning and evening. The dry season is also the best time to spot wildlife. As the water dries up, wildlife tends to congregate around the remaining water sources, thus making it easier to spot animals.
If you’d like to experience Zimbabwe’s Eastern Highlands with lusher landscapes, then visit between March and May. This is towards the end of Zimbabwe’s rainy season.
