Petra. An ancient city made famous for its buildings carved right into the sandstone cliffs, Petra is a must-see site when visiting Jordan. Spend time at the iconic Treasury but also make sure to see sites such as the Street of Facades, the Monastery, and more.
Wadi Rum. Located in southern Jordan, this protected desert wilderness is notable for its sandstone mountains and reddish sand valleys. It’s other-worldly landscapes have been featured in movies, such as “Lawrence of Arabia,” “The Martian”, and “Dune”. Visitors will also find some glamping opportunities here, with a chance to see the Milky Way without any light pollution.
Dead Sea. Float in the Dead Sea, the lowest point on Earth’s surface. The water here is almost ten times saltier than the ocean, making it easy to float. The Dead Sea is also bordered by Israel.
Ruins of Jerash. These well-preserved ruins are all that remain of the ancient Greek city of Gerasa. Walk the colonnaded street, marvel at the oval plaza and Hadrian’s Arch, and let your imagination run wild at one of several Roman theaters.
Tour Amman. The capital city of Jordan, Amman offers a blend of ancient history with modern living. Take time to explore historical sites such as the Citadel and Roman Theatre, walk the colorful Rainbow Street, and take a step inside the King Abdullah I Mosque.
Ajloun Castle. Perched atop a hill overlooking the town of Ajloun, this 12th-century Muslim castle was constructed to defend against invading Crusaders. Today, you can explore the ruins and enjoy the view out over the Jordan Valley.
Hike the Siq Trail. Traverse through Wadi Mujib, a narrow canyon filled with waist-high water. This is one of Jordan’s most popular hiking trails and a highly Instagrammable spot.
Dana Biosphere Reserve. Jordan’s largest natural reserve is full of dramatic, rocky landscapes. This is another popular spot for hiking.
Marvel at the Mosaics of Madaba. Known as the “city of mosaics”, Madaba is famous for its rich concentration of Byzantine and Umayyad mosaics. Be sure to see the Map of Madaba, a two million-piece mosaic depicting all of Palestine and the Nile Delta.
Hike the Jordan Trail. Hike from one end of Jordan to the other along this 400 mi (650 km) trail. The trail passes through 52 towns and villages, and it is believed that Jesus, Moses, and Muhammad have all walked this path.
When To Visit Jordan
Jordan has an arid climate, featuring hot summers and little to no rainfall over the course of a year. Temperatures peak in the summer months, where highs can reach anywhere from 88°F (30°C) to 103°F (39°C), depending on your location. Temperatures in southern Jordan, near Wadi Rum, can be 15°F higher than in Amman.
The best time to visit Jordan are in the spring (March-May) and fall (September-November) seasons. During these periods, temperatures will be pleasant for outdoor sightseeing, humidity will be lower, and you’ll have a low chance of rain. You will also find fewer crowds than in the summer months.
Visit in the winter (December-February) for the fewest crowds and colder temperatures, with highs around 60°F (15°C). Flights and hotels will likely be cheaper, but you may need to layer up for outdoor sightseeing. This is also when you’ll have the highest chance of rain.
