North Cascades National Park

North Cascades National Park is one of the least visited national parks in the United States, but for those who make the trip, it delivers some of the most dramatic mountain scenery in the country. Jagged, snow-capped peaks stretch as far as the eye can see, glacial lakes glow in impossible shades of turquoise and emerald, and hundreds of miles of hiking trails wind through some of the wildest terrain in the lower 48.

It is just a short drive from Seattle, yet North Cascades sees only a fraction of the visitors who flock to nearby Mount Rainier and Olympic. That means quieter trails, fewer crowds, and a genuine sense of wilderness that is increasingly hard to find in the national park system.

Known as “the American Alps,” the North Cascades Range contains the largest glacial system in the contiguous United States, with more than 300 glaciers tucked between its peaks. Whether you come for a single scenic drive along Highway 20, a challenging day hike to Cascade Pass, or a multi-day backcountry adventure, this park has a way of staying with you long after you leave.

Founded: October 2, 1968

Annual Visitors: 47,000 in 2025, making it one of the least visited national parks in the USA.

North Cascades National Park: Geography 101

The North Cascades National Park Complex is divided into three distinct management units: North Cascades National Park, Ross Lake National Recreation Area, and Lake Chelan National Recreation Area.

Most visitors spend their time along Highway 20 and around the lakes of the Ross Lake corridor, with Stehekin and the Cascade River Road area rewarding those who venture a little further.

NCNP Map

The Highway 20 corridor is where most visitors experience North Cascades. This is the only paved road through the park complex, running east-west along the Skagit River valley through the Ross Lake National Recreation Area. Along the way you’ll pass Gorge Lake, Diablo Lake, and Ross Lake, each with its own overlooks, short trails, and access points.

The star of this corridor is Diablo Lake, whose brilliantly turquoise water, colored by glacial flour suspended in the melt, is one of the most photographed sights in the park. The Diablo Lake Vista Point, just off the highway, delivers one of the best views in all of North Cascades for almost no effort.

Ross Lake, just north of the highway, is a long reservoir stretching all the way to the Canadian border. It’s a quieter, more remote experience, popular with paddlers and backpackers who come for the solitude and scenery.

The Cascade River Road is a gravel road that branches south from Highway 20 near Marblemount and winds 23 miles into the heart of the park. It is open only from approximately July through October, and it leads to one of the most rewarding destinations in all of North Cascades: the trailhead for Cascade Pass and Sahale Arm.

This is the route to explore North Cascades beyond just the highway. The drive is stunning, following the Cascade River through ancient forest with rugged Cascade peaks towering above the valley. Allow most of a day if you plan to hike Cascade Pass.

Stehekin sits at the far northern end of Lake Chelan, in the Lake Chelan National Recreation Area at the southeastern edge of the park complex. There are no roads connecting Stehekin to the outside world. You reach it by ferry from Chelan, by floatplane, or on foot via backcountry trail. That isolation is exactly what makes it special.

Once there, you’ll find a small, tight-knit community, a historic lodge, a handful of hiking trails, and some of the most peaceful scenery in Washington state. The Agnes Gorge Trail is a highlight, as is simply riding the ferry up the length of Lake Chelan with the mountains rising on both sides.

Hiking in North Cascades National Park

North Cascades is first and foremost a hiker’s park. The scenic drives and lake overlooks are wonderful, but the park doesn’t fully reveal itself until you get onto the trails.

With 400 miles of hiking routes ranging from easy paved walks to multi-day backcountry routes, there is something here for every level of hiker, though the most memorable experiences almost always involve gaining some elevation.

The Maple Pass Loop, also known as the Heather-Maple Pass Loop, is one of the best day hikes in the North Cascades, and one that’s surprisingly accessible for the views it delivers. In early August, Tim, Kara, and I completed this hike and came away genuinely impressed. It’s not our favorite hike in the area […]

Cascade Pass and Sahale Arm: The Best Day Hike in North Cascades

We’ve hiked in more than 50 national parks across the United States, and the Cascade Pass and Sahale Arm hike is one that still stands out. We did this hike as part of a six-week road trip through the national parks of Colorado and Washington, and it was the perfect way to end the trip. […]

How Many Days Should You Spend in North Cascades National Park?

With one day, drive Highway 20, stop at the Diablo Lake Vista Point, and do one hike, Rainy Lake or Thunder Knob if you want something easy, or the Maple Pass Loop if you want spectacular views.

Two days gives you time to add the Cascade River Road and do the Cascade Pass and Sahale Arm hike, which is the best day hike in the park.

Three or more days opens up Stehekin, backcountry routes, and the quieter trails in the park’s more remote corners. Avid hikers could easily spend a week here.

We recommend spending at least two to three days in North Cascades National Park. One day is enough to drive the highway and get a sense of the landscape, but the park’s best experiences, particularly the Cascade Pass hike and a visit to Stehekin, take more time. Extra days also give you a buffer for weather, which can change quickly in the mountains.

When is the Best Time to Visit North Cascades National Park?

Highway 20, the main road in North Cascades National Park, is typically closed from early November through early May, although these times can change depending on snowfall amounts.

If you want access to the entire park, plan your visit for the summer months, when all of the roads are open. This is also your best chance for sunny skies and warm temperatures, although rain and snow are a possibility all year long.

Cascade River Road, the gravel road that ends at the trailhead for the Cascade Pass to Sahale Arm hike, is only open from July through October.

How to Plan Your North Cascades National Park Trip

The best time to visit North Cascades National Park is late June through September, when Highway 20 is fully open, the Cascade River Road is accessible, and hiking conditions are at their best. July and August offer the most reliable weather, though afternoon thunderstorms are possible. Note that Highway 20 typically closes from early November through late April or May depending on snowfall.

  • 1 day: Drive Highway 20, stop at Diablo Lake Vista Point, do one hike
  • 2 days: Add the Cascade River Road and the Cascade Pass and Sahale Arm hike
  • 3+ days: Add Stehekin, backcountry trails, or the Mount Baker area nearby

Most visitors focus on the Highway 20 / Ross Lake corridor, which is accessible and scenic. If you have extra time, the Cascade River Road area rewards the effort with the park’s best hiking. Stehekin requires advance planning (ferry reservations) but is a uniquely special experience.

Hiking is the best way to experience North Cascades. Trails range from flat, easy paved walks like Rainy Lake to demanding all-day efforts like Cascade Pass and Sahale Arm. For a full breakdown, see our Best Hikes in North Cascades National Park.

Because the park’s key areas, which are the highway corridor, the Cascade River Road, and Stehekin, each require separate planning, it’s worth thinking through your route before you go.
