Top Experiences In American Samoa

Explore the National Park of American Samoa. Full of great hiking, pristine beaches, and stunning viewpoints, this national park is spread across three islands: Tutuila, Ofu, and Ta’u. Tutuila is the largest, easiest to visit, and most popular of the three islands.

Pago Pago Harbor. A scenic harbor where you will find Pago Pago, the capital of American Samoa, along with restaurants, museums, gun batteries from WWII, the iconic Rainmaker Mountain, and more. The National Park of American Samoa Visitor Center is also located at the harbor, making it the perfect place to begin your adventure into the national park.

Hiking. One of the best ways to explore American Samoa is along one of many different hiking trails. You’ll find a lot of dirt trails through lush tropical jungle, adding to the feeling of exploration. Our favorite was the Mount Alava hike, which gave incredible views over Pago Pago Harbor.

Snorkeling. With crystal clear water and diverse marine life, American Samoa is a fantastic spot for snorkeling. One of the best spots for snorkeling on Tutuila is Fatumafuti beach.

Attend a Fiafia Night. This cultural event celebrates Samoan heritage with dinner, music, and dancing. It is an entertaining way to gain insights into the Samoan culture.

Scenic Coastlines. The American Samoa coastline varies from sandy beaches to volcanic rock, and from palm tree-lined shores to rainforest covered mountains that drop into the sea. You can also find tide pools and blowholes. Turtle and Shark is one of the most picturesque spots of Tutuila’s coastline as it encompasses all of these elements together into one spectacular view.

Visit Aunu’u Island. This small island sits off the southeast coast of American Samoa, and features some beautiful and remote beaches, as well as a hiking trail. Part of the adventure is the boat ride there and back.

Scenic Drives. Most of American Samoa is scenic, but our favorite drive is between Breakers Point and ‘Au’asi. This drive takes you past some of the best scenery on Tutuila, with endless views of rugged coastlines and sandy beaches. Stop to enjoy one of the beaches or have a beachfront meal while sipping on homemade piña coladas.

Find a Hidden Beach. The secret beaches are typically located on private property so you have to ask the landowner for permission and pay them a small fee. Their off-the-beaten path locations mean they involve a short hike to reach, but reaching one of these beautiful, secluded coves is well worth the effort.

Ofu Beach. This secluded, picturesque beach is consistently rated as one of the world’s best beaches, and for good reasons. Imagine a long strip of white sand with palm trees, pristine water, and a backdrop of tropical forest covered mountain peaks. Ofu Beach is practically perfect. Now imagine having it all to yourself. Due to its secluded nature, you just might.

Visit Samoa. Extend your trip to visit the islands of Samoa, just a short 30-minute flight away. You’ll find more stunning beaches, great spots for snorkeling, as well as numerous hidden waterfalls.

When To Visit American Samoa

The best time of year to visit American Samoa is during the dry season, from mid-May to October. You’ll experience mostly clear skies with limited rain, making this the perfect time for outdoor activities. Since American Samoa is located close to the equator, temperatures don’t change too much throughout the year. Always expect hot, muggy weather year-round.
