With a vibrant Christmas market right at the foot of the iconic Cologne Cathedral, plus several more spread across the city, Cologne is one of the top destinations for German Christmas markets. Combine that with easy day trips and a rich history, and Cologne makes a fantastic base for a northwestern Germany itinerary.
We added Cologne to our Christmas market plans mainly to see the Cologne Cathedral. However, we were surprised by how excellent the Christmas markets in Cologne turned out to be.
Our visit to Cologne marked our fourth trip to the European Christmas markets and our second dedicated trip to Germany’s Christmas markets. We’ve now visited 20 Christmas markets across Germany, and Cologne easily ranks in our top ten. We spent three days based in Cologne, exploring the city’s Christmas markets and taking a few day trips to visit markets in nearby cities.
Our guide below highlights the best Cologne Christmas markets, plus other great things to see in the city. We also include plenty of helpful tips from our travels to give you the best experience possible.
Tips for Visiting the Cologne Christmas Markets
Most of the Cologne Christmas markets are located within the old town. Several sit near the outskirts of the city center, but you can get to them with a 30-minute walk. For those who prefer less walking or have a tighter schedule, you can use the tram, bus, or Uber to reach these markets farther away.
All of these Cologne Christmas markets open in mid-November, with many running until late December. A few markets stay open through the end of the year.
Most stalls open around 10 or 11 am and close around 9 or 10 pm. Visiting in the evening is the most picturesque time to see these markets, as they’ll be beautifully lit for the holidays. However, this is also when crowds are at their peak.
Markets within Cologne’s old town can get extremely busy over the weekends and especially at night. We visited sevaral markets on a Saturday night and it was overwhelming, with visitors packed in like sardines. You’ll have a better experience visiting on a weeknight or earlier in the day.
Bring cash, as some stalls only accept cash payment.
Any drink served in a glass comes with a refundable deposit (pfand) which ranges from €3 to €5. You can return the glass to get your money back or keep it as a souvenir.

Cologne Christmas Markets
This list is ordered geographically, starting with the markets in the heart of Cologne’s old town and expanding outwards. All the Christmas markets on this list can be reached on foot, but there are also public transportation options if you’d prefer less walking.
Weihnachtsmarkt am Kölner Dom

What Makes It Unique: The largest and most popular of the Cologne Christmas markets, this market sits at the base of the towering Cologne Cathedral (Kölner Dom).
This Christmas market is Cologne’s most iconic Christmas market. Seated at the base of the Cologne Cathedral within the scenic Roncalliplatz, this Christmas market attracts over 4 million visitors each year. It’s also one of the most popular Christmas markets in the world.
Red tents fill the courtyard, with a giant sparkling Christmas tree acting as the centerpiece of this market. The towering Gothic-style Cologne Cathedral serves as an impressive backdrop and an iconic landmark.
You’ll find a wide variety of stalls, with those selling food and drink such as glühwein, bratwurst, spätzle, flammlachs, and more, along with tons of handmade crafts, souvenirs, and holiday-themed gifts.
Of all the Christmas markets in Cologne, this is one of the best to see at night. It’s still an impressive sight during the day, but seeing the stalls and the towering Christmas tree illuminated with colorful lights makes a nighttime visit all the more worthwhile.
Kölner Dom Christmas Market at night
The Christmas market at the Kölner Dom is Cologne’s most popular Christmas market. Regardless of time of day, you’ll find it packed with visitors, especially over the weekends and at night when everything is beautifully lit. When we visited Cologne over a long weekend, we found this market to be extremely crowded each day, sometimes as early as 10:00 am. At night visitors were packed in like sardines and we had to squeeze past people just to make it to the next stall.
In our opinion, this is a pretty market and one of the easiest to reach, but definitely not our favorite in Cologne. The overcrowding and the lackluster stall design put this market toward the bottom of our list. You’ll still find a wide variety of food options and souvenirs, but other markets on this list have better options.
PRO TRAVEL TIP: For the best experience, we recommend visiting this Christmas market during the day or on a weeknight to avoid the crowds.
Heinzels Wintermärchen – Alter Markt

What Makes It Unique: This quaint and colorful market is located in a picturesque square. This is our favorite Cologne Christmas market.
Beautifully surrounded by historic buildings, intricate wooden stalls, and plenty of shopping, this Christmas market quickly became our favorite Cologne Christmas market.
This is one of two Heinzels Wintermärchen. The second one is located in the nearby Heumarkt and is connected via a small side street. These are best seen together.
We visited this Christmas market twice, once at night and once in the morning, and it ended up being our favorite Christmas market in Cologne.

It’s a large market with a wide variety of food, drinks, and souvenirs. The pop-up stalls are also more eye-catching than those at the market near Kölner Dom. It’s centrally located downtown, less than a 5-minute walk from Kölner Dom.
Do note that this market is very popular. It can be extremely busy on weekends, especially at night. Expect large crowds crammed between shopping stalls. Even when we visited in the morning, the crowds were already beginning to pick up, though it was much more enjoyable at that time. You’ll have the best experience if you visit on a weeknight or in the morning shortly after they open.
Heinzels Wintermärchen – Heumarkt
Open: November 23, 2026 to January 3, 2027; closed 12/24 and 12/25

What Makes It Unique: This large, popular market features an ice rink, an ice stock rink, and plenty of food options. It also connects with the Christmas market at Alter Markt.
Just a short walk from Alter Markt, you’ll find another Heinzels Wintermärchen at the historic Heumarkt. This square, which has served as a trading hub for hay and other goods since the Middle Ages, now hosts one of Cologne’s most popular Christmas markets, and it’s another one of our favorites.
This market is slightly smaller than the one at Alter Markt, but it features a giant ice rink that takes up a large portion of the market’s space. The rink is surrounded by wooden huts selling glühwein, feuerzangenbowle, bratwurst, sweet treats, and other traditional Christmas market finds.
While the Christmas market at Alter Markt is better for shopping, this market is better for activities. The large ice skating rink is a fun spot to hang out and put your skating skills to the test.
Our favorite experience here was sipping feuerzangenbowles while overlooking the ice rink from the elevated platforms found throughout this market.
What is a Feuerzangenbowle? A feuerzangenbowle, or ‘fire tongs punch,’ is a type of mulled wine (glühwein) that features a sugar cube soaked in rum, which is then lit on fire. The melting and caramelizing sugar add a distinctive flavor. It is commonly available at most Christmas markets across Germany. Sometimes, it is served in a special mug or goblet with a cutout to hold the sugar cube, which is set on fire before serving. Alternatively, the rum-soaked sugar cubes may melt over a larger pot of mulled wine and be served in a traditional mug without the fire.
PRO TRAVEL TIP: Both this and Heinzels Wintermärchen at Alter Markt are best seen together. The two markets, although in different squares, are connected via a small street. A visit to these two markets will take a total of 1 to 2 hours, depending on how busy it is and your preferred pace.
Our favorite Cologne Christmas markets were the two Heinzels Wintermärchen. We liked the Alter Markt location a little more because it’s larger, offers many stalls for shopping, and is set in a more picturesque square.
Hafen-Weihnachtsmarkt
Open: November 13 to January 3, 2027

What Makes It Unique: This waterfront market offers a maritime vibe and plenty of sweet treats.
The Hafen-Weihnachtsmarkt, situated along the Rhine River, is perfect for anyone with a sweet tooth. It features numerous stalls offering chocolates, pastries, and a variety of other confections. Additionally, the market is adjacent to Cologne’s Chocolate Museum, making it a must-visit for chocolate enthusiasts.
We didn’t find the Hafen-Weihnachtsmarkt as impressive as many other markets on our list. It lacks the scenic charm and the intricate wooden stalls that evoke a classic German storybook feel. The food and drink choices are also fewer here. However, it was significantly less crowded compared to the more popular markets in the old town center.
PRO TRAVEL TIP: The best time to visit this market is late afternoon into the evening, when the Malakoff Tower and Ferris wheel are illuminated.
Markt der Engel (The Angel Market)

What Makes It Unique: The Angel Market has a heavenly atmosphere that’s worth a visit. Sip on champagne, dine on tarte flambée, and keep an eye out for angels and fairytale stilt figures that wander through the market.
This is another Cologne Christmas Market not to be missed.
The Angel Market turned out to be one of our favorite surprises in Cologne. Instead of traditional German huts, the Angel Market features white, modern-style stalls that look almost like mini beach houses. Decorated with garland, glowing white stars, and white Christmas lights, this contemporary Christmas village is a stunning sight both by day and night.
I never thought I’d use the word “upscale” to describe a Christmas market, but this one fits the word perfectly. In addition to its beautifully crafted market stalls, the market features cocktail bars serving champagne, rosé prosecco, Aperol spritz, and Limoncello spritz. So if you find yourself growing a bit tired of glühwein, step up to the Angel Bar and order something a bit different.
You can also dine on an assortment of cuisines, including Alsatian tarte flambée, Lángos, Belgian fries, flammlachs (flame-grilled salmon), waffles, and pasta dishes.
This Christmas market is also quite large. Covering the entirety of Neumarkt, you’ll find tons of large stalls selling all your traditional Christmas market finds. This is one of the largest Christmas markets in Cologne. You may even spot angels and actors on stilts walking between the market stalls.
Nikolausdorf
Open: November 16 to December 23, 2026

What Makes It Unique: A quieter market seated at the foot of a 13th century gate.
This traditional German Christmas market is situated at the foot of the scenic medieval gate called the Hahnentor, which originally served as an entrance to the old city of Cologne.
Nikolausdorf is a good market for live entertainment. Artists and musicians perform here daily. If you’re lucky, you may also catch St. Nick roaming the village streets between 4:30 and 5:30 pm.
The Nikolausdorf Christmas Market is also smaller than the other markets listed above. Covering the small square in front of the Hahnentor, there are a number of quaint wooden stalls selling glühwein, bratwurst, and handmade crafts. The wooden huts here are beautiful, adorned with garland and Christmas lights, making for a very scenic nighttime market.
We enjoyed our visit to Nikolausdorf because there were far fewer visitors than at the more popular markets in the old town. However, it does take more effort to reach this Christmas market. Rudolfplatz is a mile west of the center of Cologne’s old town. You can walk here or take public transit, which will get you close but not all the way to Rudolfplatz. We got here on the metro.
VeedelsAdvent auf dem Chlodwigplatz

What Makes It Unique: A very small market with a local vibe, located next to a 12th century gatehouse in southern Cologne.
This is another Christmas market seated at the foot of a medieval gateway, this time in southern Cologne. This is the smallest Christmas market on our list. There’s a handful of tented stalls selling glühwein, snacks such as roasted almonds, and souvenirs.
It’s a 30-minute walk from the center of Cologne’s old town by foot, so it’s a bit out of the way. However, there is a tram line that will take you right to this market from the old town.
Our Take: In our opinion, we recommend skipping this market. It’s small, it’s out of the way, and it features few of the main draws that some of the larger markets in the old town have. Plus, the market itself is not that exciting. You get a similar backdrop at Nikolausdorf, but that market there is larger and more lively, so we recommend visiting Nikolausdorf instead.
How are the Crowds at the Cologne Christmas Markets?
Cologne featured some of the most crowded Christmas markets we have seen in Germany. Markets were packed with visitors no matter the time of day, and at night it felt like a mosh pit. People were packed shoulder-to-shoulder, which made it difficult to walk between stalls.
The Christmas market next to the Cologne Cathedral was the most crowded. As it’s the most popular Christmas market in the city, visitors flock here as soon as it opens. The nearby markets at Alter Markt and Heumarkt were not much better.
We visited from Friday through Monday and each day featured crowded markets, especially at night. If you’re planning to visit Cologne, we recommend visiting during the week. Although still somewhat crowded, there were far fewer visitors on Monday than over the weekend.
Things to Do in Cologne
Below are some great things to see and do in Cologne. These can all be done at any time of year, whether you’re visiting the Christmas markets or enjoying a summer vacation.
Cologne Cathedral
The Cologne Cathedral is easily the most iconic landmark in Cologne and arguably one of the most recognizable cathedrals in the world.
Construction began in 1248, and the Kölner Dom took over 600 years to be fully completed, due to funding delays. Today, the cathedral, with its impressive and intricate gothic-style architecture, attracts over 6 million visitors each year.
It’s impossible to visit Cologne without seeing the Kölner Dom. Almost everywhere you walk, you’ll catch a glimpse of the cathedral. At 157 m (515 ft), the Kölner Dom is the world’s tallest twin-spired church.
Inside of the cathedral is the Shrine of the Three Kings, which is said to house the remains of the Three Wise Men.
For an aerial view of Cologne, climb the 533 steps to the top of a spire. It’s a tough climb, one of the highest in Europe, and there’s no elevator! The view is nice, and we were hoping for a good view of the Christmas market below, but the cathedral blocks much of it. It’s also worth noting that a metal grate surrounds the viewing platform, making it tough to take photos with a DSLR camera (smartphones are fine).
Museum Ludwig
This art museum features a diverse collection of artwork originally curated by Peter Ludwig after WWII. The museum has since become one of Europe’s leading institutions for modern art, with pieces spanning centuries. The museum is also home to the world’s third-largest collection of Picassos.
We had lunch here at the museum restaurant. The food was great and the location was perfect, since we had just finished walking across the Hohenzollern Bridge and were on our way to visiting more Christmas markets.
You’ll find Museum Ludwig near the western bank of the Rhine River, less than a 5-minute walk from Kölner Dom.
Hohenzollern Bridge (Hohenzollernbrücke)
This iconic steel arch bridge crosses the Rhine and is a popular spot for photography and views looking back at Cologne’s old town. The bridge doubles as both a rail and a pedestrian bridge, and is covered with thousands of love locks.
On the eastern edge of the bridge, you can get a great photo of the Hohenzollern Bridge with the Cologne Cathedral in the background. We did this on a cloudy, dreary day, so our photos from the bridge, and our next entry, the Köln Triangle, aren’t so great.
Köln Triangle
Seated on the east side of the Rhine River, this observation tower is a great spot to enjoy a birds-eye view of Cologne. From the top, look across the Rhine at the towering Kölner Dom and follow along with the posted signs that point out other notable landmarks.
To get here, either walk across the Hohenzollern Bridge.
Chocolate Museum
Located on the Rhine River by the Hafen-Weihnachtsmarkt, this museum is a must-see for any chocolate lovers. Inside, the full history of cocoa is displayed through exhibits spanning over 5,000 years. A tour will also include a look into a production facility where guests can learn how chocolate products are produced.
The best part, however, is a visit to the giant chocolate shop within the museum. You do not need to take a tour to see the shop. If you simply want to buy some chocolate for the road or want to learn more about its history, enjoy a visit here.

Day Trips from Cologne
Cologne is a fantastic place to spend a few days, as it makes a great home base for visiting other cities in northwestern Germany. We got around by car, but it’s also very easy to travel to all of these cities by train.
Aachen
Aachen is a small German city near the border with Belgium and the Netherlands. Here you’ll find a picturesque old town along with an enjoyable Christmas market to visit. From Cologne, it takes a little over an hour to reach Aachen by either car or train.
Trier
Trier has a small but photogenic old town that sits near the border with Luxembourg. This small city hosts a Christmas market in the city center, with the stunning backdrop of St. Peter’s Cathedral.
We weren’t overly impressed with the Trier Christmas market, but it pairs nicely with the next entry on our list, the Mosel Wine and Christmas Market in Traben-Trarbach, since they are located near one another.
Trier Christmas Market
Traben-Trarbach
This small town is an underrated gem with a unique Christmas market. Only open Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays, Traben-Trarbach features the only underground Christmas market, the Mosel Wine and Christmas Market.
The market here is located in a series of underground wine cellars, offering a unique spin on traditional Christmas markets. The town itself is also quiet and peaceful, offering a nice break from the larger and more crowded Cologne.
Traben-Trarbach is best visited in combination with a day trip to Trier, as they’re both located near the Luxembourg border and are less than an hour’s drive apart.
Apart from these cities, Cologne is also less than a 3-hour drive from Frankfurt, Luxembourg City, and Brussels. Amsterdam is slightly further but easily reachable within one day.
How Many Days Do You Need in Cologne?
In two days you can see everything in Cologne, from the top Christmas markets to the best things both within and outside the city’s old town.
We spent four nights in Cologne, which gave us one full day to explore the city plus two day trips (Aachen and Traben-Trarbach + Trier). In the evenings, we revisited our favorite Christmas markets in Cologne.
With one full day, we were able to visit most of the items on this list without feeling too rushed.
If your focus is on the Christmas markets, one day in Cologne is all you need. Many of Cologne’s Christmas markets are within walking distance of one another, and the ones that are further away are connected via metro or tram lines. However, expect a busy day.
Where to Stay in Cologne
We stayed at the Cologne Marriott Hotel and had a good experience. The rooms were clean, comfortable, and spacious, and the hotel itself is located in a convenient part of town. Found just north of the Cologne Central Train Station, this hotel is a 10-minute walk from the Kölner Dam, the start of the city’s historic area, and many of the best Christmas markets.
Another solid option is the Hyatt Regency Köln. This hotel gets slightly better reviews than the Marriott Hotel, although it’s located on the far side of the Rhine River. You’ll have a slightly longer walk to Cologne’s historic area and many of the Christmas markets. However, some people enjoy the view from their room, which looks across the Rhine River at Cologne’s historic area.
A few mid-range hotels that get good reviews and are located in the city center include Stern am Rathaus, Hotel Casa Colonia, and Hotel Ludwig Superior.
If you are traveling on a budget, Hostel die Wohngemeinschaft gets wonderful reviews.
About our Visit to the German Christmas Markets
Our visit to Cologne was our fourth European Christmas market trip and our second German Christmas market trip.
In December 2025, we started in Berlin, then traveled to Wrocław, Poland and other towns and cities across northern Germany, including Dresden, Erfurt, Cologne, Traben-Trarbach, Trier, Aachen, Heidelberg, and Frankfurt. Dresden is a must-see, Wrocław was amazing, and we also really liked Erfurt and Frankfurt.
In 2024, Julie and Kara spent just under two weeks visiting the markets in Bavaria and Baden-Wurttemberg, plus the Alsace region of France (Colmar and Strasbourg). This trip was amazing and we’ve written several southern Germany Christmas market itineraries to help you plan your time.
