It is one of the smallest countries in Europe, but it shouldn’t be overlooked, as it features plenty of great things to see and do. Top Experiences in Liechtenstein
Vaduz. The town of Vaduz is a great home-base for touring Liechtenstein. Spend time here visiting the town’s cathedral, museums, and restaurants, while also enjoying its alpine charm.
Vaduz Castle. Sitting on the hilltop above the town of Vaduz, this castle is the official home of the Prince of Liechtenstein. Although you cannot tour the interior, you can walk up the hillside to view Vaduz Castle and look out over the town.
Malbun. This quaint mountain hamlet is great for outdoor activities. In the winter there is skiing, tobogganing, and ice skating. When the snow melts, Malbun turns into a wonderful hiking destination. But for a unique experience go on a hike with llamas, which is offered year-round.
Gutenberg Castle. Seated above the town of Balzers, this castle has remained intact for centuries. Tour the castle and enjoy beautiful views over the Rhine Valley.
Liechtenstein Trail. Hike or cycle the entire length of the Liechtenstein Trail. This 47-mile (75 km) multi-stage trail weaves through different towns and hamlets with incredible scenery along the way.
Wine Tasting. Numerous vineyards line the Rhine River which runs through Liechtenstein. Tour a winery and sample a handful of local wines.
Traditional Liechtenstein Cuisine. Between activities, feast on Liechtenstein’s hearty cuisine, with dishes such as Käsknöpfle (noodles layered with cheese) and Ribel (a dish made from cornmeal).
Day Trips. Wedged between Switzerland and Austria, Liechtenstein offers easy access to other parts of Europe. Cities like Zürich, Lucerne, Innsbruck, and Munich are all within a 2–3-hour drive, making Liechtenstein a great location for day tripping.
When To Visit Liechtenstein
The best time to visit Liechtenstein is from May to September, during the summer season. Visitors will have warm weather perfect for outdoor activities, along with clearer skies.
If you’re interested in skiing in Malbun or want to enjoy an alpine winter, visit Liechtenstein from December to February. High temperatures sit around 38°F (3°C), with cooler temperatures up in the mountains. You’ll also find less tourists during this time, ideal if you’d like a quieter trip through Liechtenstein.
