Victoria Harbor. Hong Kong’s modernized waterfront, Victoria Harbor is teeming with activity. Come here and walk the Avenue of Stars promenade, visit museums, take a ride on the Observation Wheel, and admire the Hong Kong skyline.

Victoria Peak. From here you can enjoy the iconic and stunning view looking down over Hong Kong’s skyline and Victoria Harbor, as well as get a good sense for the true size of this metropolis. Arrive just before sunset to watch the city light up the night.

Chinese Junk Boat Tour. Set sail around Victoria Harbor in a traditional, red-sailed junk boat.

Symphony of Lights. Watch the world’s largest permanent light show illuminate the sky for 10 minutes every night. It is free to enjoy, and it can be seen anywhere along Victoria Harbor. It is especially stunning on a clear night.

Mong Kok. This major shopping destination is where old and new meet. Lively streets are packed with people, market stalls, and neon signs. This neighborhood is typically what you see when Hong Kong is depicted in movies. Mong Kok is especially spectacular at night, when the streets are lit up in a neon glow.

Vibrant Markets. Scattered throughout Hong Kong are densely packed collections of stalls selling antiques, street food, clothing, and quirky souvenirs. Bargain with locals and soak in the vibrant, buzzing atmosphere. The lively Temple Street Night Market is a popular choice.

Street Food. Take your pick from a wide array of tasty snacks, such as egg waffles, curry fish balls, dumplings, and more. These delicious items are cooked in stalls throughout the city.

Hiking. It might come as a surprise to first-time visitors, but Hong Kong is home to some great hiking trails. For anyone looking to escape the city buzz, these tranquil trails offer a chance to recharge and reconnect with nature. There are routes for all abilities, from short day hikes to multi-day challenging treks.

Tian Tan Buddha. This 34-meter (112 ft) tall statue of Buddha sits up on a hill on Lantau Island. Ride the cable car up the hillside to gaze upon this harmonious sculpture. Then climb the 268 steps for a closer look and to visit the museum at the base of the statue.

Nan Lian Garden. This classical Chinese garden offers a tranquil escape from downtown Hong Kong. Admire the Tang dynasty-style architecture and find peace amongst the ponds, rocks, and lush flora.

When To Visit Hong Kong

The best time to visit Hong Kong is from October through March. Temperatures are pleasant, with average highs around 20°C (68°F), and visitors will have the greatest chance of clearer skies. This is the best time of year for outdoor activities such as walking through the city and hiking on the neighboring islands.

Hong Kong’s wet season runs from April into early October. Temperatures are significantly hotter and more humid at this time of year. You will likely find cheaper hotel rates but be prepared for plenty of rainy days.

Chinese New Year is celebrated in late January or early February. This massive celebration is one of Hong Kong’s biggest festivals and is an exciting experience to witness.
