Top Experiences in South Carolina
Congaree National Park. One of the biggest highlights of Congaree National Park is walking the boardwalk trail through the old-growth bottomland hardwood forest. For those seeking a little more adventure consider following non-boardwalk trails through the park, as well as going kayaking or canoeing on Cedar Creek.
Charleston. Charleston is a small coastal city in South Carolina. Popular things to do here include touring historic homes, shopping along King Street and in the Charleston City Market, and getting a history lesson at one of its museums. Be sure to also see the Pineapple Fountain, one of the city’s most photographed landmarks, as well as the picturesque Philadelphia Alley. After all of the sightseeing, relax at one of Charleston’s numerous highly rated restaurants and rooftop bars.
Fort Sumter. A short boat ride from Charleston, Fort Sumter was where the first battle of the American Civil War took place. Today you can tour the ruins of this historic site, still armed with cannons, to learn more about this period of American history.
Magnolia Plantation. Magnolia Plantation and Gardens is one of the oldest plantations in the South. Just a short drive outside of Charleston, take a self-guided walking tour through the property, enjoy the natural beauty of the gardens, and learn more about the plantation’s deep-rooted history.
Hilton Head. Hilton Head Island is a popular vacation destination, especially for families. It is known for its beaches, golf courses, and resort-style vacationing. Spend a day on the water, cycle some of its many pathways, or simply relax on a sandy beach.
Myrtle Beach. Another great beach vacation spot, Myrtle Beach is known for its wide beaches, numerous golf courses, mini golf courses, a lively boardwalk, and family friendly attractions. Myrtle Beach is also known for its thriving music scene. It has been nicknamed “Music’s Favorite Beach” due to its numerous live music venues.
Huntington Beach State Park. Just south of Myrtle Beach is Huntington Beach State Park. This park offers a blend of rich wetlands and sandy beaches. Walk the boardwalk trails over the wetlands and keep your eyes peeled for wildlife. See the Atalaya Castle, a Moorish-style mansion, and enjoy some time on the beach.
Brookgreen Gardens. Spend an afternoon touring Brookgreen Gardens, featuring a wildlife preserve, an extensive sculpture garden, and tranquil paths that take you past Oak trees draped in Spanish moss.
Barbecue. South Carolina is known as the “Birthplace of Barbeque”. With mouth-watering recipes and treasured sauces, you can’t pass an opportunity to eat South Carolina BBQ.
Best Time to Visit South Carolina
The summer season (June through August) is the best time to visit South Carolina’s beaches. You will have the warmest and sunniest days for unwinding on a beach, spending time in the water, and enjoying beach resort amenities.
The spring season (April through May) and the fall season (September through November) are the best time to visit South Carolina’s cities, as well as the national and state parks. The temperatures will be more pleasant than the summer season making it more ideal for sightseeing and outdoor activities like hiking.
