Driving the Sani Pass

Top Experiences in Lesotho

Maletsunyane Falls. Standing at 192 meters (630 feet) tall, this dramatic waterfall is a natural highlight of Lesotho. Sharp cliffs drop hundreds of meters into the canyon, which appears extra lush when visiting in the wet season. Enjoy a short hike to the falls from the nearby village of Semonkong or follow a more strenuous trail into the canyon.

Sani Pass. The Sani Pass is a scenic, winding dirt road that leads up and over the Southern Drakensberg Mountains, connecting Lesotho with South Africa. The route acts as one of several border crossings between the two countries, and is one of the most scenic drives in the region.

Have a Drink at Africa’s Highest Pub. Enjoy a drink at Sani Mountain Escape, Africa’s highest pub. The pub sits at the top of Sani Pass, right along the border between Lesotho and South Africa, and has an elevation of 2,874 meters (9,429 feet).

Maloti Mountains. Over two thirds of Lesotho is covered in mountains. Hike and camp out in the Maloti Mountains, known for its dominant peaks and rolling terrain that extend as far as the eye can see.

Pony Trekking. Depart on a multi-day trek through Lesotho’s mountainous countryside on a Basotho pony. Along the way, enjoy the beautiful mountain scenery and visit remote villages.

Katse Dam. This massive, 185 meter (607 foot) tall dam provides another opportunity for great views within the Maloti Mountains.

Thaba-Bosiu Cultural Village. Thaba-Bosiu, just a short drive from the city of Maseru, is known as the birthplace of the Basotho people. Tour the cultural village and museum to learn about local traditions and history.

Go Skiing. Visit Afriski, the only ski resort in Lesotho and one of a handful of ski resorts across all of Africa. At 3,050 meters (10,000 feet) above sea level, Afriski relies on a mix of natural and artificial snow to create good conditions. It is sure to be a once-in-a-lifetime experience. While here, grab a bite to eat at Sky Restaurant, the highest restaurant in Africa.

When To Visit Lesotho

The best time to visit Lesotho is during their fall season, from March to May. Temperatures are pleasant for outdoor activities such as hiking and pony trekking, and the landscapes will remain lush from the summer rain. We recommend packing extra layers if visiting the Maloti Mountains, where temperatures will be cooler.

If you’re interested in skiing, the best time to visit Afriski is during the winter months of June through August. Temperatures will be colder along with the best chance for fresh snowfall.
