Trolltunga is a 10 to 12 hour hike. The last thing you want at the end of that day is a long drive back to Bergen. Trust us on this one: stay nearby, give yourself a proper night’s rest before the hike, and you’ll have a much better experience.
The good news is you have solid options across four towns, each with a different feel and a different distance to the trailhead.
Here’s the quick version: Tyssedal is the closest town to the trailhead and the best choice if you want to minimize driving on the day of the hike.
Odda is slightly further away but larger, with more hotels, restaurants, and the best public transportation connections if you’re not renting a car.
Kinsarvik is about an hour away but tends to offer better value and higher-rated properties.
Eidfjord is the furthest, about 70 km from the trailhead, but it makes sense if your itinerary has you coming from Bergen and heading north afterward. That’s exactly what we did, and we’d make the same call again.
We stayed at Vik Pensjonat og Hytter in Eidfjord, and we loved it. Kara declared our apartment “epic,” the breakfast was excellent, and the fjord views from our room were the perfect way to unwind after one of the longest days we’d ever spent on a trail. If your route takes you through Eidfjord, don’t hesitate.
That said, if we were planning the trip fresh today with flexibility on where to stay, we’d look hard at Odda. It hits the sweet spot of proximity, amenities, and quality. Our top picks are below.
Our Recommendations

For budget travelers → Trolltunga Aparthotel in Tyssedal. Closest location to the trailhead, decent reviews, and the most affordable option on this list.
For families → Trolltunga Fjord Living in Tyssedal, Trolltunga Odda Apartments in Odda, or Vikinghaug in Odda, all get excellent reviews and have the space a family needs after a long day on the trail.
For public transportation travelers → Stay in Odda. The shuttle to the Trolltunga trailhead stops near the Trolltunga Hotel, and buses and trains connect Odda to the rest of Norway.
If we did it again → Trolltunga Odda Apartments, Odda Atmosphere, or Vikinghaug: modern, well-reviewed properties with kitchens and washing machines, which you will absolutely want after a 28 km day. Or Vik Pensjonat og Hytter in Eidfjord if the route calls for it.
PRO TRAVEL TIP: Book as early as possible — ideally several months in advance for peak summer dates. Accommodation near Trolltunga fills up fast.
Best Places to Stay Near Trolltunga
When you look at Trolltunga on a map, it looks like it’s sitting in the middle of nowhere. There are no big cities near the hike. When looking for a place to stay, you will have to take your pick from the small towns in the area.
Here are our recommendations in the nearby towns, starting in Tyssedal, the town closest to the start of the Trolltunga hike, and working our way out from there.

Tyssedal
This is as close as you can get to the start of the Trolltunga hike. This small town only has a few accommodations and restaurants but it’s the perfect town to base yourself if you want to avoid a long drive to and from the hike.
From Tyssedal, it is a 6.2 km drive to the trailhead, about a 12-minute drive.
Trolltunga Fjord Living
This beautiful 3-bedroom apartment offers free, onsite parking, a fully equipped kitchenette, washing machine, air conditioning, and two bathrooms. It’s a great pick for families and small groups.

You can’t beat the location of this budget hotel. It looks a bit like a prison on the outside, but inside, the rooms are large, clean and comfortable. Take your pick from a room with two twin beds, a one bedroom apartment, or a bunk bed in a dorm. It gets decent reviews.

Odda
Odda is just south of Tyssedal (6 km or a 7 minute drive). Odda is slightly larger than Tyssedal, with several more hotels and restaurants to choose from.
If you are traveling through Norway using public transportation, Odda is the best place to stay near Trolltunga. Trains and buses link Odda to the other large towns in Norway. Plus, you can take a bus from Odda to the trailhead of Trolltunga.
From Odda, it is roughly a 15 km drive that takes about 25 minutes.
Vikinghaug
This small but gorgeous hotel gets rave reviews from its customers. They offer several three bedroom apartments that can accommodate up to seven people, perfect if you are a family or traveling as a group. Rooms even come with a washing machine, great for washing those sweaty clothes after the hike to Trolltunga.

The shuttle from Odda to Trolltunga stops near the outside of this hotel making it a convenient place to stay if you won’t have your own vehicle. Kinsarvik
Kinsarvik is located north of Trolltunga, almost one hour a way by car. So why stay here? You get more for your money in Kinsarvik. Not only are hotels cheaper but in general they get better ratings than several of the hotels in Tyssedal and Odda. You will have to drive further, but the drive is gorgeous, and it may be worth it to save some money and stay on a nicer property.

Kinsarvik Camping
With a beautiful setting on Hardangerfjord, Kinsarvik Camping offers cottages that can accommodate up to 6 people. These cottages have two bedrooms and a kitchen. There is also a 3-bedroom house that can accommodate up to 8 people.

Eidfjord
Eidfjord is the furthest town from Trolltunga on this list and it may seem strange that I am even recommending it, but I am doing so because this is where we stayed. To get to the start of the Trolltunga hike it’s a 70 km drive and it takes about an hour and fifteen minutes.
So, why did we stay here? On our road trip through Norway, we drove in from Bergen, hiked to Trolltunga on the following day, and then drove up to Flåm the next day. For our itinerary, it made sense to stay north of Trolltunga. Sure, we had to drive more on the day of the hike but it really wasn’t that bad.
Vik Pensjonat og Hytter
We loved this charming boutique hotel. We had a two bedroom apartment that Kara describes as “epic.” The breakfast is delicious and we loved the views from our room. Vik Pensjonat og Hytter also offers family sized cabins.
